  1. Harvey is rapidly intensifying, now expected to be a major hurricane at landfall.

  4. Catastrophic flooding expected from 18 to 24 inches of rain across a widespread area of southeast Texas.

Hurricane Hunters found newly-classified Hurricane Harvey to be rapidly intensifying Thursday afternoon.  As of the 2 pm advisory from the National Hurricane Center, sustained winds with the season’s third hurricane were up to 85 mph and the center was located 335 miles southeast of Corpus Christi, Texas.  Harvey is forecast to become a Major Hurricane and possibly have winds up to 125 mph at landfall Friday night or early Saturday along the central coast of Texas.  The hurricane is then likely to stall or move very slowly back offshore over the weekend, likely producing catastrophic freshwater flooding across a large area of southeast Texas.
