[tropics-header] Matthew is "extremely dangerous" and headed for Florida, according to the National Hurricane Center's 2 pm update on the Category 4 storm. [tropics-footer]      

Major Hurricane Matthew threatens The Bahamas Wednesday, then likely to turn toward Florida's Atlantic Coast Thursday. Precise impacts can not be nailed down just yet, but should become clearer in the next 24 hours.

Hurricane conditions are possible in the watch area within 48 hours. Tropical Storm Watches have also been issued for much of Florida's Atlantic Coast. Real-time updates from official sources and live streaming available around the clock from the Florida Public Radio Emergency Network.

The National Hurricane Center made a "significant shift west" to their projected track of Hurricane Matthew. "Direct hurricane impacts" are now possible in parts of Florida.

The slow movement of Major Hurricane Matthew will make it difficult to forecast over the next week. A direct hit to Florida is unlikely, but tropical storm or hurricane condition can NOT be ruled out anywhere along the Atlantic coast.

Hurricane Matthew is making its move to the north, but confidence is still not any higher on where it may track after landfall in Cuba early next week.

Matthew rapidly intensified overnight, now with winds of 115 mph. National Hurricane Center Director Rick Knabb says confidence is lower than normal on Matthew's eventual track.
