- Tropical wave approaches the peninsula Tuesday

- Widespread rain expected, some of it heavy

- Tropical moisture lingers in panhandle through Thursday

It's the height of hurricane season, and a new tropical storm is likely to form in the Atlantic soon. However, it will not likely threaten land. A much weaker tropical wave is what will produce widespread rain and cloudiness in Florida this week.

An area of shower and thunderstorm activity associated with a tropical wave was slowly moving through the southeast Bahamas Sunday. Atmospheric conditions are unfavorable for any tropical cyclone development, but the wave will likely approach Florida Tuesday.

Widespread rain and cloudiness is expected across the peninsula Tuesday, generally rotating around a weak area of low pressure from east to west. Some of the rain could be locally heavy, especially in the afternoon hours when there may be some enhancement from sea breeze interactions.  Rainfall accumulations of 2 to 3 inches will be possible near and north of the wave's track, which is most likely going to be across southwest Florida and up the Gulf coast side of the peninsula.

As the tropical wave drifts northwest Wednesday, the wet weather will then spread into parts of the Florida Panhandle. The deeper moisture is expected to linger behind the wave for a couple of days, keeping rain chances and intensities elevated through Thursday.
