Development Near Yucatan Peninsula Possible This Weekend

The National Hurricane Center says a disturbance north of Honduras may gradually develop into a tropical cyclone this weekend or early next week.  Not much was happening in the designated area Tuesday, but forecast data suggests tropical moisture will become better organized this weekend and a broad area of low pressure may form.

A credible forecast cannot be made this far out whether a tropical storm will form or where this system might move.  A tropical storm forms in the Atlantic Basin during the month of June about every other year on average.  Tropical Storm Colin developed on June 5th last year and became the earliest third named storm on record. It swept across north and central Florida producing minor flooding and isolated tornadoes. Other notable recent June tropical storms include Bill (Texas, 2015) and Debby (Florida, 2012), both of which produced major inland flooding.
